A typical Reformer Pilates lesson

What to Expect

Here we have an hour long Reformer session squeezed into 32 seconds. If you’ve never tried Reformer Pilates before then don’t worry, they’re not normally this quick! Each session is tailored to you and your ability and experience. As you move through the sessions you’ll notice your strength, and mobility increase.

A typical Reformer session at Surf Fit Pilates will start with the footwork series, designed to mobilise you ankles, knees, and hips. You’ll get the fluid moving around your joints and begin to strengthen the muscles in your legs. As we move along, you’ll be gradually challenged by introducing instability and increased, or decreased resistance to work against.

We’ll then move up the body, working your mid-back and arms. Again your muscles will be challenged as you move from prone to sitting upright, facing forwards and back. Working against lighter spring tension can be more challenging than heavier resistance. You’ll work your spine through all planes of movement, flexion, extension, lateral flexion, and rotation. All the while you’ll be strengthening your core muscles, even if you don’t realise it!

I know that as a Pilates teacher I’m biased, but the Reformer is a superb piece of equipment. If you wander into any gym you’ll find huge pieces of equipment designed to work just one set of muscles. The Reformer will work literally all of your muscles, not just the big superficial ones, but all of the little muscles that help the big muscles do their thing. The little muscles are usually forgotten about, but they are the easiest ones to damage, groin sprain anyone? Strengthening these little muscles will make them more resistant to damage.

Most people come to Pilates through injury, at the advice of their doctor or physiotherapist. If you begin to practice Pilates regularly you’ll reduce the chances of back pain and may cut out the getting injured bit, and avoid hours of painful physiotherapy!
